Description
The Glenfiddich 12 Year Old is the world’s best-selling single malt the expression that opened the category to the world. The 18 Year Old Small Batch Reserve is what happens when William Grant’s family distillery, still independently owned after nearly 140 years, takes that same spirit and commits another six years and an entirely different maturation philosophy to it. The patience required to produce an 18-year-old single malt from an independently owned distillery without the pressure of a conglomerate looking for returns shows in the glass.
Small Batch Reserve uses three stages of maturation. The whisky first spends 18 years in both Spanish Oloroso sherry casks built by Glenfiddich’s own coopers and American oak bourbon casks, developing the rich fruit, baked apple, and oak character. Then, uniquely, the selected casks are married together in small batches for a further three months of integration a step that unifies the different cask influences into a single, cohesive expression with exceptional consistency. Every batch is individually numbered. The result is a remarkably rich, fruity, and complex whisky with a warming finish that justifies every year that went into making it.

Tasting Notes
Color: Rich bronze deeper and richer than the 12 Year Old, reflecting the Oloroso sherry influence
Nose: Remarkably rich ripe orchard fruit, baked apple, dried apricot, and robust oak, with a distinct sherry-like sweetness from the Oloroso casks
Palate: Luxuriously full dried fruit, candy peel, dates, cocoa, leather, stone fruit, and clove, all elegantly overlaid with oak notes. The 3-month marrying period creates a seamless integration that most age-statement whiskies don’t achieve
Finish: Warming, rewarding, and distinguished long and spiced with vanilla, citrus, and dry oak lingering well after the glass is empty
FAQ
What is the small batch marrying process?
After 18 years of primary maturation in Oloroso sherry and American oak bourbon casks, the selected casks are combined in small batches and left to marry together for an additional three months. This integration period allows the two distinct cask influences the dried fruit and spice from the sherry wood, the vanilla and apple from the bourbon oak to fully harmonize into a unified flavor profile rather than existing as separate notes on the palate. Every batch is individually numbered, meaning you can trace exactly which batch your bottle came from.
How does Glenfiddich 18 compare to the 12 Year Old?
Glenfiddich 12 uses Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks with a mellowing period in marrying tuns producing the distillery’s signature fresh pear and vanilla character. Glenfiddich 18 uses the same cask combination but extends aging to 18 years, then adds the small batch marrying process, developing significantly more depth, dried fruit richness, and oak complexity. The 18 is the 12 with six more years of patience and an additional maturation step.
