Production & Heritage

Compass Box, the London-based blending house founded in 2000 by John Glaser, has built its reputation on unconventional cask management and transparent labeling. Art & Decadence draws from multiple distillery sources: the dominant Balmenach malt was split and finished in Marsala, Sauternes, and Madeira casks, while Linkwood malt aged in Palo Cortado sherry casks and Glen Moray malt finished in oloroso sherry casks add further layers of complexity. Grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas distillery rounds out the blend. The whisky was given a light 10-micron filtration and was not chill-filtered, preserving texture and mouthfeel. Only 9,496 bottles were produced worldwide, with the U.S. release beginning in November 2023.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Marzipan and gingerbread open the nose, followed by cooked pear, cinnamon, and allspice. Beneath those initial impressions, waxed wood, red apple, and traces of mulled wine emerge alongside a subtle herbal note suggestive of eucalyptus.

Taste: The entry is medium-rich and immediately fruity, with toffee and vanilla meeting toasty pastry notes. The mid-palate broadens into dark chocolate, chestnut, and dates, while the influence of the dessert wine casks becomes unmistakableMarsala and Madeira sweetness layered with dried apricot and fig. Black peppercorn and clove provide a warming counterpoint that keeps the sweetness in check.

Finish: Moderately long and creamy, with lingering orange blossom, white chocolate, and a thread of wet oak. The dried fruit character persists through the tail, gradually giving way to a gentle spice fade.

How to Drink Art & Decadence

At 49% ABV, this whisky rewards patienceserve it neat and allow a few minutes of rest in the glass for the dessert wine influence to fully bloom. A few drops of water open up additional fruit and pastry notes without dulling the texture. For cocktails, the rich fruit-and-spice profile suits several formats: a Rob Roy, where the Marsala-influenced sweetness complements sweet vermouth naturally; a Blood & Sand, where the orange blossom and dried fruit notes amplify the cocktail’s cherry and citrus elements; or a Whisky Sour, where the 49% ABV and creamy mouthfeel hold up against lemon juice while the fig and date character adds depth.

Why Art & Decadence?

The use of three distinct dessert wine cask typesMarsala, Sauternes, and Madeiraon the same Balmenach malt base is a production choice with very few parallels in Scotch whisky. That approach, combined with contributions from Palo Cortado-aged Linkwood and oloroso-finished Glen Moray, creates a blending canvas far more complex than most limited releases at this level. The 49% ABV and light filtration preserve the full weight of those cask influences without compromise. For drinkers who appreciate Compass Box’s philosophy of transparency and inventive blending, Art & Decadence represents one of the house’s more ambitious experiments in cask-driven flavor development.
