Whisky is a huge part of Scotlands history and culture. Yet almost half of our distilleries havenow closed, to become Lost Distilleries.

Our Archivists and Master of Whisky engage in a balance of science and art to understand howthe original Whisky might have tasted and blend modern malts to breathe life back into thedistillery.

Alexander Bonthrone, founder of the Stratheden Distillery in Auchtermuchty, Fife, attributed thequality of his famous whisky down to two elements – the superiority of his water supply, theLovers Pool, and his old illicit stills. Legendarily primitive, Stratheden lasted for nearly 100years, from 1829 to 1926, before American Prohibition denied the Bonthrones their key market.
