Distillery Information
Nestled in a tranquil, forested valley near Sendai in Japans Miyagi Prefecture, the Miyagikyo Distillery was established in 1969 by Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru. Surrounded by rivers, mountains, and clean, humid air, the site was carefully chosen for its natural beauty and exceptionally soft waterelements that play a crucial role in shaping the distillerys signature style.
Unlike Nikkas rugged, coastal Yoichi distillery, Miyagikyo was designed to produce a softer, more refined spirit. Using steam-heated pot stills, the distillery crafts whiskies that are elegant, fruit-forward, and delicately floral. The serene environment and slower maturation conditions contribute to a smooth, balanced character that has become a hallmark of Miyagikyo malts.
